A few months ago, the Adventist Asa Sul Elderly Home was contacted by the Bible Society in Portugal to take part in the project "Listening to the Bible in care homes". This project was specially designed for elderly people living in nursing homes in Portugal.
The Asa Sul administration immediately embraced this opportunity realizing the benefits it would bring to the lives of church members living in care homes.
Thus, last June, Asa Sul received the PROCLAIMER device. It is a Solar Radio that has the Bible in audio, and it took about 6 years to complete. Through the dramatization of the reading, the device allows its hearing as if it were a radionovela.
“We were looking forward to the arrival of this tool because we have some elderly people who can no longer read the Holy Scriptures and, with this method, they can enjoy the sacred text again”, said Sandra Machado, technical director of Asa Sul.
“Our experience during this month has been very positive and we have been able to see a happier and comforted countenance in the elderly who have benefited from it”, continued Machado. “As carers, we have a responsibility to look for simple and productive ways to give the elderly a better use of their time, and to help/reinforce important knowledge for their lives. PROCLAIMER is a useful tool in this responsibility”, added Machado. “The vision of the ASA administration is to have total quality in the services provided, and we thank the Bible Society for this precious contribution, which helps us and promotes conditions for each elderly person to have a closer relationship with Jesus. PROCLAIMER has been a blessing in the life of this institution”, concluded Machado.
