The Adventist aid organisation, ADRA Germany, has presented its annual report for 2020. The non-governmental organisation, which has been awarded the DZI (excellence) seal of approval for donations, is thus accountable to institutional donors and donors. In an appreciation letter, the former Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul, pleaded for stronger international solidarity and sustainable development cooperation.
Last year, ADRA Germany helped over 1.75 million people. The focus of the work was on education, health and disaster prevention and relief. The annual report gives a complete and verified account of income and expenditure and shows examples of what ADRA's disaster relief and development cooperation looks like in practice.
"Thanks to the support of our private donors and public donors, such as the German Foreign Office or the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, ADRA has been able to give people all over the world an improved perspective on life," comments Christian Molke, Chairman of the Board of ADRA Germany, on the annual report.
Challenges posed by the Corona pandemic
"The biggest challenge for all of us was certainly the Coronavirus pandemic. In our projects, we first had to ensure the integrity of our staff and beneficiaries,” explained Molke. “In addition, there were official orders such as curfews, school closures, and general lockdowns. With a lot of passion and commitment, we were able to continue all projects, even if we had to reschedule some essential projects.” He continued, “However, when disasters also occur, even the adapted implementation steps reach their limits. We saw this in Beirut, for example, where a terrible explosion in August 2020 devastated the entire city. We also report on this in the annual report.”
Low share of administrative costs
Of every euro that ADRA Germany has at its disposal, 91 percent goes directly into project work. The administrative share is eight percent. Only one percent flows into measures for appeals for donations and public relations. ADRA assures that the donations reach where they are needed.
