The war that started on February 24 had devastating humanitarian effects in Ukraine. It led to the displacement of the population, both inside Ukraine and at the borders of neighboring countries.

As people are evacuated from big cities and head for the borders, they often bring only what they can take with them. Many refugees end up walking long distances due to the limited operation of transport systems and damage to infrastructure, such as roads and bridges. When they reach the borders, there are long lines of people, with stays up to 20 hours.

The Norwegian Refugee Council, in partnership with ADRA Romania and ADRA Ukraine intervenes in the situation of refugees in Ukraine, through the framework project "Hope for Ukraine" , assisting with their essential needs, namely: food, hygiene products, clothing adapted to climatic conditions, antiseptics products, and heating units.

The beneficiaries of "Hope for Ukraine", which is part of the field of expertise "Assisting the socially disadvantaged", are the Ukrainian refugees from Ukraine. Numbering more than 10,000 people, their main needs will be met to help them weather the crisis period triggered by the war.

The project "NRC Food Assistance ", implemented for Ukrainian refugees in Ukraine, started on March 16 and is being carried out for 30 days, in partnership with the Norwegian Refugee Council (funding office), ADRA Romania, and ADRA Ukraine (implementation).

The goal of the NRC Food Assistance project, with a total value of $ 100,000, is to assist a target group of Ukrainian refugees in Ukraine, consisting of more than 10,000 people, including women, children and babies, people with disabilities, the elderly, and vulnerable people.

ADRA will target the most vulnerable and beneficiaries will receive ready-to-eat food that can be cooked or prepared at the busiest border points, along with water, tea, hygiene kits, and tent heating units.

"The NRC Food Assistance project aims to respond quickly to the situation facing Ukrainian citizens, since the beginning of the military offensive on Ukraine,” explained Bogdan Stănică, ADRA Romania project manager. “We want to intervene with basic food, hygiene kits and clothing for all those fleeing the war and [those] who have found a safe place in Romania for both themselves and their families. We want the implementation of the project to be fast and to reach as many beneficiaries as possible so as to ensure a climate as free as possible from the worries generated by food and hygiene [needs]. [And not only that], to provide them with an energy resource in order to focus on short-term and medium-term future plans that they have," concluded Stănică.
