A few years ago, it was said that radio would not evolve, indeed, that it would disappear over time. Instead, we have witnessed an evolution of the medium that had remained substantially unchanged until recently.
In fact, today, radio is no longer broadcast only over the air on FM, but also through other digital platforms, particularly satellite and internet (both through the pages of the websites of the broadcasters themselves and through social media).
It is also worth highlighting the ever-increasing diffusion of radio content through mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, car radios, and through proprietary apps too. Finally, and this is the novelty, there is digital radio broadcasting (Dab+) which, unfortunately, is still limited to mobile use as the Ministry is still in the process of assigning frequencies at a regional level.
In recent years, the trend towards multi-platform broadcasting has gained new momentum, and this allows the more editorial aspect of broadcasters to be enhanced.
Launched on December 1, 1979, in the so-called free radio season, RVS (Radio Voce della Speranza) turns 45 in 2024. It is an anniversary that also celebrates its evolution, given that it has adequately organized itself to make its content available on the greatest possible number of platforms. In this way, it enhances its RVS’ brand and its claim ‘Accendi la speranza’ (light up hope).
Today, for local radio stations like ours, the challenge opens up in maintaining and strengthening their identity by making their content available to all listeners, regardless of the platform. This is certainly not an easy challenge. Until now, in fact, local radio stations have considered their catchment area of listeners to substantially coincide with the service area of their FM broadcasting systems. This, at present, is no longer entirely true. Today, due to the many existing and non-local platforms, listening from home via terrestrial ether (FM) is decreasing as the number of receiving devices in homes is decreasing.
The main market surveys highlight a constant trend in this sense, where the "old" home radios are increasingly being replaced by listening via PC or smartphone. Finally, the so-called "personal listening" (which once occurred with small radios and earphones), today, occurs mainly via smartphones and audio content streamed via the Internet via podcasts. It is, therefore, necessary to be aware that, today, it is no longer enough to be present only on FM but on any medium suitable for audio listening.
This year, we are celebrating 45 years and RVS does not look that old, given its readiness to adapt to the times with new transmission platforms.
